If you're deciding between a physical guidebook mystery and an app-based city quest, Mystery Guides (mysteryguides.co.uk) and Cluenaverse represent two different approaches. Here's how they compare.

What are Mystery Guides?

Mystery Guides are glossy, illustrated activity books (around 40 pages) that lead you on a self-guided whodunnit adventure in a city. You follow cryptic clues, eliminate suspects, discover local history and work towards a clever reveal. There’s no app or phone required to play - you use the book on location. Adventures are aimed at adults but suitable for kids 8+; you start whenever you like (self-guided). They’re sold per book (typically around £19.99; some titles and promos may differ), with free express delivery. Mystery Guides is a UK company (Wells Sermo Ltd), well-reviewed and TripAdvisor-listed, with a formula that’s easy to pick up and play in many cities.

What is Cluenaverse?

Cluenaverse is a mobile city quest and outdoor mystery experience. You use your phone and app to follow the story, decode clues and explore the city with your team. It’s built around clear, well-paced mysteries for different group sizes and ages, focused on central London.

Why consider Cluenaverse?

  • App and navigation - If you want built-in navigation, timers or digital hints, Cluenaverse delivers that in-app; books don’t.
  • No printing or carrying - Everything lives on your phone; good if you prefer not to carry or lose a booklet.
  • Alternative format - When comparing Mystery Guides with other city mysteries, Cluenaverse is a strong app-based alternative.

Bottom line

Mystery Guides are ideal if you want a book-based, off-screen whodunnit you can start anytime and give as a gift. Cluenaverse is ideal if you want an app-based city quest with story and clues on your phone in London. Choose by format: book (Mystery Guides) or app (Cluenaverse).

FAQ

Early access means you join now, for free, by downloading the app and completing a short onboarding. You get set up before our first quest launches, and you receive a personal referral link you can share so friends can join too. When we launch our first quest, you're already in and ready to play; no last-minute rush.

Early access and app onboarding are free. When a quest is on sale, you can buy activation codes on this site via checkout (currently a mock payment for testing - no real card charge). Redeem codes in the Cluenaverse app to play.

After you complete onboarding, you'll see your unique referral link in the app. Share it with friends - anyone who uses it can join early access too. When paid quests launch, friends get 10% off their first quest and you earn 15% account credit. See our Referrals page for full details.

Cluenaverse is a mobile city quest and outdoor mystery experience. You follow a story, solve clues, and explore the city with your team. For a team, it is best if each player joins on their own phone. Our quests are self-guided. You play when you want, at your own pace, in central London.

Choose a quest, buy activation codes at checkout, then open the Cluenaverse app and redeem a code. Head to the start location with your team (2-6 players recommended). Each player should join the experience on their own phone. Follow the story - clues will guide you from location to location until you crack the case.

No. Cluenaverse quests are self-guided and flexible. Once you've bought a quest, you can start whenever it suits you (within the validity of your ticket). The app saves your progress if you want to pause and continue later.

Our quests are set in central London - areas like the South Bank, Westminster, Spitalfields, Bloomsbury, the City of London, and Covent Garden. Each quest has a different theme (murder mystery, spy thriller, literary mystery, and more) and a distinct route.

Most quests take between 2 and 3 hours if you move at a steady pace. You can take longer if you pause for food or drinks along the way. Duration is given on each quest page.

Quests are for colleagues, friends, families, and couples, in teams of 2 to 6. Age recommendations vary by quest - some are suitable for ages 10+, others for 12+ or 14+. Check the individual quest page for details.

Pricing is per quest location and is shown on each quest page when that location is for sale. You pay once for each activation code; your team of 2-6 typically shares one purchase (buy extra codes for larger groups).

Each player should bring a smartphone with the Cluenaverse app installed, plus comfortable shoes for walking and weather-appropriate clothing. No special equipment or prior knowledge of London is required.

Yes. A team gift voucher is one code for 2-6 players. You pay on the gift page, the code is emailed straight away, and it can be redeemed in the app from 1 March 2027. It is not tied to one quest yet. Unused codes can be refunded.

There is no time slot to cancel. Email the address in the footer and we will refund an activation code that has not been redeemed. A redeemed code is not refunded for a change of mind or the weather. If a fault on our side stops you finishing, we will refund or replace it. Details are in the Refunds and cancellation section of our Terms of Service.

Email the address in the site footer. We're happy to help with early access, the app, or questions about upcoming quests.
